The Schema series represent the beginnings of an artistic collaboration between architect Janis Saltans and Mara Zoltners. We wanted to engage in a visual dialogue that explored spatial dimensions and representation of time and memory. Schema is based on Henri Bergson's diagrams of memory and perception found in Gilles Deleuze's Cinema 2 - The Time-Image. Three diagrams were used as a departure point for a series of computer generated drawings that served as prototypes for photographs and small objects. Traditional darkroom processes created an opportunity for another kind of intuitive exploration to take place. The resulting works function not only as a record or imprint of our collaborative process, but also metaphorically to index the spaces and gaps between points in the present and layers of the past.
